October 13, 2026, marks the first anniversary of the passing of Mr. Wan Runnan.
Mr. Wan Runnan was a renowned Chinese democracy advocate and a key pioneer in exploring China’s market economy during the early days of Reform and Opening-up period. In the 1980s, he led the Stone Group (Sitong) in comprehensively implementing digital office systems, earning a reputation as a “Confucian entrepreneur” of Zhongguancun (Silicon Valley of China). His significance lay not merely in his business achievements, but more in his unwavering commitment to carry on individual dignity, freedom, democracy, and social justice.
In 1989, faced with a profound test of history and conscience, Mr. Wan publicly supported the student movement and upheld his sense of social responsibility — a stance for which he paid a heavy price. Through his actions, he demonstrated that one must maintain an independent spirit in the face of power and refuse to betray one’s conscience for the sake of self-interest.
He once said, “My life has been fulfilling; I have embraced my conscience and have no regrets.” These words truly reflect the convictions and choices that defined his life. For over three decades, he remained steadfast in his ideals. With his magnanimous character, firm beliefs, and inclusive spirit, he influenced and inspired countless people striving for freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
Mr. Wan Runnan’s stature stemmed not from power or wealth, but from the strength of his character and his unwavering moral integrity. He was more than just an entrepreneur; he was a thinker and a man of action possessed of a strong sense of civic duty and a commitment to the times. He was not only a respected elder to many but also a spiritual beacon of conscience and courage within the Chinese democracy movement.
On this anniversary, we will hold a global memorial service for Mr. Wan Runnan via Zoom. Together, we will reflect on his life’s journey, honor his moral commitment, and carry forward his steadfast dedication to freedom, democracy, and conscience.
Though he has departed, his spirit endures. The ideals Mr. Wan Runnan steadfastly upheld and the strength of character he embodied will endure in the annals of history, as well as in the hearts of all who strive for freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
May the beacon never fade; may conscience long endure.
